I. Product Knowledge
What is Jian zhan?
Jian zhan is a black-glazed ceramic tea ware produced by the Jian Kiln in the Song Dynasty of China. The body of the ware has a high iron content (commonly known as "iron body"), and the glaze color is deep with natural kiln-formed patterns such as rabbit hair, oil droplets, and yamato change. Each Jian Ta is handmade, with a unique texture, and combines both practicality and collectible value.
What are the types of glaze colors for Jian zhan pottery?
Porcelain Brushed Glazed Vase: The surface of the glaze features fine, silky lines resembling rabbit hair, and it is commonly in silver blue or golden brown colors.
Oil-drop bowl: Features unevenly sized metallic spots, resembling oil droplets. The best quality is characterized by a silvery-blue luster.
Yuwantan Pottery: A rare form of glaze variation, with colorful patterns that change and shift like a cosmic scene.
Which teas are suitable for brewing in Jianzhan?
Because the body of Jianzhan is thick and has strong heat retention properties, it can soften the water quality and enhance the aroma of the tea. It is especially suitable for fermented tea types (such as Pu'er, black tea, and rock tea), but there is no need to use a specific type of tea exclusively. Just clean it promptly to avoid cross-contamination.
II. Quality and Identification
How to identify genuine Jian zhan pottery?
Fetus body: The fetal bone is thick, the cross-section is grayish-black, and when struck it makes a metallic sound. It feels rough like "pearl crackers" (a characteristic of high iron content).
Glaze: Made by firing natural mineral materials, it has fine pores (not flaws). The chemical glaze has bright colors but is harmful to health. Please ensure you have a quality inspection certificate.
Shape: The hand-pulled pottery may have slight irregularities, but when inverted and placed on the tabletop, it should fit tightly without any shaking.
What are the common flaws of Jian zhan pottery?
Deformation, glaze jumping, cracking, bottom sticking, sand holes, etc. are considered substandard products and are not recommended for purchase. Fine pores and handcrafted marks are normal production features.
III. Use and Maintenance
Do I need to open the lid when making a new pot? How to do it?
Yes. The steps are as follows:
① Rinse the inner and outer walls with boiling water;
② Boil the tea water for 5 minutes to remove the iron taste;
③ Dry with a soft cloth and let it air dry naturally.
How to cultivate "Colorful Aura"?
Regularly steep with strong tea (such as aged white tea or Pu'er tea), allowing the tea infusion to come into contact with the glaze surface.
Rinse immediately with clean water and avoid leaving any tea stains; wipe with a soft cloth and avoid direct exposure to sunlight.
The vitrified glazed surface is difficult to achieve a good color effect. It is recommended to choose matte glazed Ding ware.

Attached: Practical Tips
Safety Warning: Jianzhan is fired at a temperature above 1300℃. It contains no chemical additives and complies with international food contact safety standards (test reports available upon request).
Collection suggestion: For beginners, choose practical models within the 100-yuan range (such as those with a closed mouth or a gathered mouth). Avoid purchasing imitation items at high prices just to seek rare variations of the kiln marks.
